The challenge:
Attract tech community to use the Start Alberta database
Powered by Dealroom, a leading platform for intelligence on tech ecosystems, the Start Alberta deal flow database provides real-time insights and accurate data on Alberta’s growing innovation ecosystem.
Backed by sponsors with high expectations, Start Alberta had ambitious goals to document all current and net new companies to the database, build and sustain visitor traffic, and showcase the strength and potential of the Alberta technology sector to the world.
To become the most accurate database on Alberta startups and funding, we needed to figure out how to best build awareness of the database and engage the tech community to sign up and use the tool, including busy tech founders and investors.
The solution.
We helped engage the busy, hard-to-reach founder and investor community by collaborating with Start Alberta on topics of interest, first experimenting with social media.
We added a monthly newsletter to distribute database insights. Quarterly impact reports helped us refine top engaging themes and tactics.
We supported with marketing the annual Start Alberta Tech Awards via social media and blog content.
Database insights on social attracts tech community.
LinkedIn and Instagram posts helped build awareness of the usefulness of Start Alberta data and drew in new sign-ups. Posts focused on illuminating valuable database insights including recent funding, tech companies in select sectors, and hiring underway.
Monthly newsletter engages via email.
Centered around a monthly theme from women-led startups to AI, the monthly newsletter delivers database insights to inboxes and invites people to create or update their profile.
Tech Awards showcase community leaders, draw views.
We developed the social media strategy, drafted and published social content to announce the award winners live from the 2022 and 2023 Tech Awards.
Blog content also highlighted award winners and profiled the achievements of each award winner.
The result: Database engagement and community growth are up.
After 24 months of strategic social content to attract and engage tech founders and investors, and 12 months of producing a monthly newsletter, Start Alberta saw a 66% increase in social community growth and a 31% traffic boost to the database.
Views on Alberta tech’s innovation ecosystem now reach across Canada and around the world including the US, the Netherlands, the UK, France, Spain and Japan.
The strong growth of Start Alberta’s impact on the tech community has also solidified value for sponsors and backers.
Looking ahead, additional growth opportunities include expanding reach beyond Calgary and Edmonton and engaging new Alberta tech founders and entrepreneurs.
